Evaluation 1: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

I was originally influenced by music videos which show their narrative through the use of filters which alter itself from the original filter to tell different stories through the way the audience view the video, changing the prospective to connote the viewpoint has changed, this is significant in showing narrative development without the use of sound, through visually explaining whats going on. I decided to use this method whilst visually describing the story for two reasons; enhancing the dramatic view i intend to create and to successfully get across a dramatic change in the story.

I did this in my music video by having clips' colours and filters unaltered, and other clips taking away all the colour and leaving everything in black and white. I did this to signify two things; past and atmosphere. When an audience sees a video completely in black and white they connote that the video is from a long time ago, linking non-coloured videos with them being from the past, which is what i wanted the audience to think, and i thought that the best way of achieving this was this method. Basing my music video at the point of when my character has been freed of the place he has been stuck, showing previous shots in black and white which signified the past and a time of depression.

The colour black connotes to death and depression and sadness, this is a strong emotional element that i wanted to seize for my music video, straight away putting the audience into the state of mind of the emotional atmosphere i intended to create, this being the narrative through the character being stuck in his house facing all these problems. The black and white filter strongly reinforced these connotations and create an atmosphere where the narrative thrives through the audience's first impression to the video. This further follows through the rest of the video with the other clips holding a black and white filter, at least until the end of the video when the rest of the video is coloured, showing the present time. I chose to keep the videos that show the character free in colour because in contrast of the black and white clips, it shows thriving colours of shots that capture nature's natural beauty (which were chosen for the video intentionally for this), to really significantly reinforce the contrast of the past and the present, i also decided it was necessary to have the videos that were based in the present to be in colour without any filters due to the connotations it creates to being set in present time. Black and white having connotations to the past, normal everyday colours without a filter being set in the present, and colourful filters (why i did not use due to it not being necessary) connoting to the future.
