Andrew Godwin's Theory

Andrew Godwin believes that there are five aspects in a music video:

1. Through beat and seeing what the lyrics mean

2. Relationship between song and visuals

3. Narrative and performance of song

4. Technical aspect of a music video

5. Star image, making them the main attention through different camera shots

The first step in the process to decipher these aspects is to analyse the structure o the chorus and verses. The second step is the voice of the artist and how it differs from others, making itself unique which gives the artist identification which links to their star image. The third step would be the narrative of the artist through the song and his position in the story, as a character, or narrator, the music video significantly aids this with the lyrics of the song.

The are three visuals that are used in a music video to promote the song. Through illustration; Music videos use shots and images to illustrate/explain the meaning of their lyrics to the genre, narrative and song. The second being Disjuncture; Is the video narrative of the song completely ignore the music lyrics. Finally, amplify; The use of repeatability, The use of repetition with camera shots which are edited to repeatedly appear through the video which is then quickly drummed into our heads due to its shown significance.

Godwin believes that it was essential for an artist to be involved in the music video, this being performing or acting in it as a role of a character or singer as it helps keep the song more realistic and gives the audience a connection and understanding to the song. This is very popular amongst most songs such as singers like Nikki Minaj and Ariana Grande who perform major roles in each music video like '99 problems' and 'Starships'.

Andrew believes that music videos can promote a song through the analysis of the lyrics, this is shown in many music videos when a character does as the song describes, for example when a song says sing and the artist is singing, and when the artist says jump and they jump so that the music and actors both say jump and jump.

Godwin refers to the star image as a vital aspect of a music video that he or she makes the music video look more appealing to the audience when brining a unique style to the video in their portrayal of a character or singer.
